Things to Know Before Applying for Driving Licence in UK

Holding a valid driving licence has become a necessity of life. This is majorly owing to the increasing dependence of various modes of transportation to travel from one place to another. Therefore, in order to make this process simpler and easier for all, the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) has enlisted all the steps involved in the process of applying for a driving licence in the UK, its requirements, etc. The agency has also facilitated the citizens of UK with DVLA customer service that specifically addresses all the queries related to driving licences.

When a person plans to obtain a valid driving licence in UK, he/she needs to appear and clear two driving tests – practical and theory. Clearing these tests makes one eligible to apply for a full driving licence. While it is important for a person to first appear for theory test followed by a practical test, there are certain cases in which this rule does not apply. These include the following:

  • Tractor test
  • Test to upgrade from automatic to manual
  • Car and trailer test
  • Test to progress through motorcycle categories
  • Lorry and trailer test
  • Bus and trailer test
  • Large lorry test, in case the person already possesses medium lorry licence
  • Large bus test, in case the person already possesses medium bus licence

Booking a test

Before appearing for a test, one needs to make a booking for the same. This can be done either online or offline.

Theory test
To book a theory test online, all one needs to do is visit their website’s page and enter your name, licence and date of birth information. For offline booking, one simply needs to make a call at DVLA’s customer service number from Monday to Friday within a pre-defined deadline.

Practical test

To appear for a practical test, one needs to first clear his/her theory test and obtain the pass certificate number to apply for the practical test. When applying online, all one needs to do is visit the DVLA’s official website and follow the following steps:

  • Choose the type of vehicle you are applying the driving licence for such as, car, bus, lorry, etc.
  • Provide the details of your provisional driving licence.
  • Choose test date and center.
  • Fill in your personal details.
  • Enter your debit/credit card details to pay the fees.
  • Choose time for test.
  • Pay and you are registered for the test.

If one wishes to check the details of his/her driving test appointment details, it can be done online by visiting the DVLA website and offline by calling one of the representatives available at the DVLA customer care number.
